Designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2010 as part of the Central Highlands complex, the 21,000-hectare conservation forest harbors 128 endemic plant species and 14 bird species found nowhere else on Earth. The range sits between 900 and 1,905 meters above sea level, with Gombaniya forming the highest summit. British colonial surveyors mapped the terrain in the 1830s, but the interior remained largely inaccessible until forest department trails opened in the 1990s.
