The Knuckles Mountain Range earned its name from five peaks that resemble the knuckles of a clenched fist when viewed from Kandy, twenty-five kilometres to the south-west.
Designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2010 as part of the Central Highlands of Sri Lanka, the range spans thirty-five kilometres of ridgelines, river valleys, and montane cloud forest between 900 and 1,900 metres above sea level. The Dumbara Kanduvetiya — the mist-laden mountains — shelter more than 1,500 endemic plant species, purple-faced langurs, and the Sri Lankan leopard within a mosaic of evergreen forest, grassland patanas, and isolated village clearings that have remained largely unchanged for two centuries.
